When can you claim clothes as a tax deduction

When can you claim clothes as a tax deduction?

Unfortunately, ordinary clothes that you wear to work can’t be claimed as a tax deduction.

You can only claim a tax deduction when clothing is:

  • Protective, such as gloves, aprons, overalls or steel-capped boots.
  • A uniform that is compulsory and branded or one that is registered with AusIndustry. But the rules on uniforms are complex. For example, if your uniform consists of everyday clothes like black pants and a white shirt, then it probably won’t qualify for a tax deduction.
  • Occupation-specific, like a chef’s jacket.

You may only claim a tax deduction if you bought the clothes and your employer did not refund you. You must have a receipt to prove that.

You may also claim for laundering or dry-cleaning clothes that are tax-deductible.
