When you open your own business, you may have to register three different names with different authorities.
1. Your business name. This must be registered with ASIC, unless you’re using your own name. This is the name under which your business will trade. It can’t be identical or very similar to an existing Australian business or company name.
2. Your website name. This must be registered with auDA, which is the administrator of Australia’s ‘.au’ top level domain, although your hosting company can do it for you.
3. Your brand name. This is optional – you could register a brand name for a particular product. But first check there isn’t already a registered trademark for that name and product.
You can also register your chosen names as trademarks with IP Australia to protect them in Australia.
