The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has launched two website sweeps to identify greenwashing and fake reviews.
First, the ACCC is focusing on 200 company websites across most industries to find misleading environmental claims. It considers a claim misleading if an ordinary consumer could misinterpret it.
Second, the ACCC will look at reviews on websites, review sites and social media. It will focus on businesses who incentivise their customers to place positive reviews about themselves or negative reviews about their competitors.
On social media, the ACCC is targeting influencers who do not disclose their advertising or sponsorship deals when promoting a product or service.
The ACCC says the sweep, which will continue into 2023, is to protect small businesses and consumers so they can make well-informed purchasing decisions.
